I work at BNSF on scheduling, mostly on intermodal traffic: getting more out of each railcar, and getting the right car under the cargo at hand. It is the same problem I have always worked on — capacity, demand and timing — with heavier equipment.

Before that I spent nearly nine years at AWS, on the systems that keep serverless and LLM workloads supplied with compute, storage and inference. And before that I ran my own practice out of Colorado: micro-service and service-based architecture, authentication and authorization in distributed environments, continuous delivery pipelines, test automation.

I have been writing here since March 2007 — through Java, JRuby, Groovy, user-group talks, tokens, Kubernetes, a long silence, and back to gems. The archive is intact, typos and all.
